Hi Sarah. Thanks for the comment on our blog. We'll try to give you some suggestions for some things to do, but since we're new parents, we really haven't looked at Suzhou through the eyes of a five year old.

One suggestion: make sure the hotel you choose is comfortable because Suzhou gets really hot and humid in the summer, and you might find yourself staying indoors during the day. (Although you live in Hong Kong, so you must be used to the heat.)

There are a couple indoor playgrounds. One in the Rainbow department store on SuXiu road near Central Park (the park would be nice to walk around in too) and one in Rainbow Walk beside JinJi Lake where you could also stroll around the lake and do some activities there. You can't go swimming in the lake though, the water isn't clean enough for that!

There's a giant Ferris Wheel and amusement park that overlooks Jinji Lake and the SIP. We've never gone on it, but it looks cool.

If you haven't already we'd recommend you try to contact someone at the Suzhou Expat Association There are a lot of expats here with kids your age so you might find better advice from them (or even a playdate?)

Good luck with your research and travels, drop us a line when you're in Suzhou and maybe we can meet up for coffee or something.

Hello I was looking up China blogs-Suzhou blogs and found yours. Been looking around and reading -very interesting. I like the set up quite a bit- makes me think I could do something else with my own.
I can relate to talking to bus drivers/taxi drivers and hoping they understand you. The other day I had a taxi driver slam on his brakes when I realized he was going past where I wanted to go and spoke up quickly. The three cars behind us and double decker bus did not appreciate it.
I live in Hong Kong (US expat) my husband travels to suzhou frequently for work. In June we will be joining him for a trip, we have a 5 and 6 year old. Probably staying a week maybe two if we can find enough to do to keep them busy and entertained aside from hanging out at the hotel. I was wondering if you would have any information for me on what we can do with them while he is at work during the week or weekends. If you have a post of your own to refer me to, or any ideas on where to go, what their is to do with kids I would appreciate it. I am slooowly learning Mandarin and I am not afraid to try to say things so I don't mind venturing out a little bit with the kids.
 Thanks

Glad to see you are enjoying your travels! Sitting at my desk and waiting for my obstreperous students (your dictionary, hey hey hey) who shout video and candy when they walk in, I can't stop but think that you guys suck for being in thailand and me in korea:) Enjoy yourselves and I got my diving certificate in thailand so if you guys are keen on taking the next step I am sure you it will be worthwhile. There are no harmful sharks so that is always a bonus. Nice blog! Keep writing as I enjoy reading the thoughts of the lamonte-birds. Good luck in China and keep safe on your travels.
