In which the travelers fight boredom

We’re getting a little bored here on Mui Ne beach. It’s a really lovely place with beautiful sand and ocean, but there aren’t many people here and there’s not a lot to do. There are also no decent restaurants; every place has virtually the same menu and it’s not very inspiring. With this in mind we headed out this morning to book two things for tomorrow: a short trip to see some of the sights around Mui Ne, and a bus away from here to another beach called Nha Trang.

Later we went for lunch at a new restaurant (which sadly did not redeem Mui Ne’s reputation for mediocre food). After we ate we decided to take advantage of the restaurant’s free pool table. Anyone who has every played pool with Gin knows that she is really bad at it, unless she has reached an optimum level of drunkenness. If she’s too sober she seems to over-think her shots and completely mess them up. If she’s too drunk she gets clumsy and even worse at pool. Just the right level of drunkenness though seems to make her use instinct and intuition when aiming her shots to great effect. Unfortunately Gin’s one beer with lunch did not result in optimum intoxication and the pool game was an embarrassing display of Gin’s lack of hand-eye coordination.

After lunch we put on our bikinis (okay, Ric wasn’t actually wearing a bikini) and went to the beach for some fun. We decided to walk way down the beach to a tree covered point that we could see in the distance. We’re not sure but we think it was about a kilometre each way. On the way there we stopped where a culvert was releasing water from inland streams out to the ocean. We attempted a little terra-forming and dug around in the sand for a while to divert the stream and create an island. Tired from our efforts, and covered in sand, we continued on along the beach, finding a few dead fish and some really beautiful shells on the way. After reaching the point we realized there was really nothing special on the other side, so we turned around and headed back towards our hotel. We tried floating and swimming part of the way, but the surf was extremely strong and Gin got tired of being swamped in the waves, so we walked most of the way. Once we got back to our hotel we washed off all the sand and headed out for dinner (bleh) and then went to bed early. Our trip for tomorrow starts at 4:30am so we can watch the sunrise.
