In which the travelers fall in love with a grocery store

This morning we got up and headed over to the bus station (literally across the street from our hotel, very convenient) to take our bus to Melaka. As we’d been promised the bus was very comfortable with cushy seats only three across (2+1). Gin slept most of the way, and Ric played on her new Nintendo DSL.

When we arrived at the bus station we found a taxi to take us to our hotel, we really enjoyed the ride because we got to see a lot of the city including some historical sights. So far Melaka was looking like a pretty cool place. We checked into our hotel room at the Fenix Inn, which unfortunately doesn’t have any windows but otherwise is great. We hadn’t eaten since breakfast and it was now about 4pm so we went to find something to eat. After walking around for a while (and starting to get a bit snippy with each other) we ended up in a Malay restaurant where we had no idea how to order food. The server helped us, and eventually we ended up with some rice and some other dishes. Other than the chicken satay which was yummy, the food was edible, but not very good. We are trying to be culturally sensitive but Malaysian food is just not doing it for us.

After ‘lunch’ we walked around a bit and ended up at the Carrefour (a store kind of similar to Walmart, but much higher class since it’s from France!). Having lived in Korea for so long we are used to grocery stores having little that interests us, but this was completely different! There were all kinds of wonderful things here, and we left after an hour or so with two new shirts for Ric, a National Geographic magazine all about China, some toiletries, and some delicious buns and pastries from the bakery. We have decided that we could definitely live in Malaysia.

After leaving the Carrefour we went back to our hotel and relaxed for the rest of the night with our in-room internet connection. We are so glad we bought this Eee PC!
