In which the travelers likely consign themselves to hell

With Ric’s shiny new camera in hand we set out today to see some more of Kuala Lumpur’s sights, and hopefully get some nice photos. We’re still happy walking around KL, and haven’t wanted to go anywhere that requires motorized transport yet. So off we went on foot towards Merdeka Square. “Merdeka” apparently means “Independence” in Malay, and this square is the place where Malaysia declared independence from England in 1957, just over 50 years ago. Although Merdeka Square is a place of historical significance, it is also just a big grass field, without a lot to see. We took a few photos of the square and the Ministry of Culture’s beautiful building across the street and then had to head for shade before Gin got too crispy.

Next we wanted to stop and see the Jamek Mosque on the way to Little India. We found the mosque easily, but since we aren’t Muslim we couldn’t go in to admire it properly. We briefly wondered to ourselves if it would be worth converting to Islam (and perhaps many other religions too) just so that we would be welcome in their places of worship. We are pretty sure we are now going to hell.

After looking at the mosque from our side of the fence we headed to Little India to see the market and find some lunch. Unfortunately we headed in the exact opposite direction, necessitating a lot of extra walking, and a little bit of sniping at each other. Once we finally arrived, we found a restaurant and ordered a set lunch, which was served on a banana leaf. We have decided that we will be using banana leaves for dishes at all our future parties, it will make clean up so easy! Although we didn’t recognize most of our food, lunch was delicious; as Gin said: she’s never found any Indian food that she didn’t like!

Fed and happy we headed to the Petronas Towers again to get some better photos with the new camera. After being harassed by a ‘monk’ selling little gold Buddhist business cards we headed inside for the ultimate cultural experience…. Yes, we went to see a Hollywood movie (Iron Man, if you care). Lame, we know, but we throughly enjoyed it and might even do it again sometime!
