In which the travelers see a lot of towers

After our failed attempt to get out and see Kuala Lumpur yesterday, today we made more of an effort as tourists. We headed out from our hotel towards the Kuala Lumpur Tower (see here). Like many towers around the world this is a big radio tower with an observation deck for tourists. We wandered around the base for a while took a couple photos with some random guys who seemed impressed by our foreignness, and then headed up for the big view. It was cool to see the city, and we got some good photos of the Petronas Towers, but other than that it wasn’t really very exciting. We appreciated two minor things: there were water fountains near the bathrooms (so we didn’t have to find or pay for water), and the observation binoculars bolted to the observation deck floor were free and weren’t one of those cheap pay-a-dollar-for-5-minutes rip-offs that most towers have. Yay, Malaysian tourism-friendliness.

After leaving that tower we decided to go to the towers that Kuala Lumpur is really famous for: the Petronas Towers (see here). Even if you don’t know the name you have definitely seen pictures of these towers; they are the tallest twin towers in the world and used to be the two tallest buildings in the world until Taipei 101 stole the title. We took a couple of photos, but soon were attracted by the air-conditioning in the mall at the base of the towers and went inside. Remember, Malaysia is close to the equator, and consequently, freaky hot.

Here we checked out the many glitzy stores that are way out of our price range: Tiffany’s, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more that we are too out of the high fashion loop to even recognize. Eventually we ended up at a Canon store where Ric was gravitationally drawn by the digital SLR that he’s been lusting after for the past couple of months. Once Gin saw the way Ric looked at the camera she knew the gig was up, but it took Ric an hour or so of checking it out, walking around the mall thinking about it, and then checking it out for another half hour, before he finally decided that he had to buy this camera.

We walked home with our bank account a little lighter, but Ric is like a kid with a new toy, and we should get some great photos! So stay tuned for future posts with some smoking hot photos! (Ya, no pressure, eh Gin?)

Hey, it must be hot. You guys are glistening : )

Can’t wait to see the super stupendious pictures that you’ll be taking. Ric are you going to let Gin use the camera?

Of course. She’s been taking it for test drives occasionally and some of the photos you see are hers. Actually if you see something you like, it’s likely one of hers.

I love the pix. I especially like seeing your smiling faces in exotic places…..much better than just sending postcard type photos. You look happy. Keep on being happy and having wonderful adventures and days of doing nothing, too. Missing you, and looking forward to seeing you, soon!
