Update: This post originally went out as an email message to all the folks on our travelogue email list. Thank you to all the wonderful folks who replied; it was nice to hear from you. We have since decided that we want to create a record of our travels on our blog, and so we’re reposting the original email message here. We’d love it if you’d add your comments here too!
Thank you,
Richard and Gin
Sawadee, everyone!
As you may or may not know, Ric and I are embarking on a long journey, which I suppose started in Korea in February, and will end in China in August. In the meantime we’ve already spent a month and a half in Canada.
We started in Vancouver, then to Calgary, Chatham, and Toronto. During our time in Canada we saw many people, but not everyone we wanted to. It always seems to go that way, and we hope to see more people next time we’re back. While we were in Vancouver we spent time with my parents, recovered from jet lag, and played with our dog Inca at a wonderful dog park. In Calgary we cleared out a few more boxes from my sister’s basement, got to know our two nephews better, and I got laser eye surgery. In Chatham we had some wonderful quality time with my grandparents, and I got to know them and their life stories so much better! Last in Toronto we took part in a workshop to help us become better teachers. We had a wonderful, whirlwind tour, and though we were sad to leave our friends and family again, we were also excited to get back on the road (or jumbo jet…)
After a grueling 23 hour flight (with a stop in Tokyo that was sadly not long enough to leave the airport and see our friends) we arrived in Bangkok last night. Knowing how braindead we would be after our flight I had made arrangements for a driver to meet us at the airport and take us to our hotel. That part of the trip went off without a hitch and I think it was some of the best money we have ever spent while traveling! Now we are staying at a very funky hotel and recovering from a bad case of jet lag. It’s currently 2:45am, but since we took a ‘nap’ from 4pm til 9pm, neither of us can sleep.
We’ll be in Bangkok for about 3 more days until we take off for the beach (location to be determined). This trip is an experiment in planlessness with no itinerary or destinations, so we’ll see how it goes! We’ll try to keep everyone up to date on our location and maybe include the odd photo or two. Got something to say? We look forward to emails and messages from you too!
Laa Kawn.
